Summer reading and activities begin June 1! Check out all the awesome programs coming up this summer for kids, adults, and families.

2019 SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Keeping our literacy skills sharp, even when school is done and the sun is out, is a very important — and fun — goal for everyone. We’ve got you covered!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

  1. BEGINNING JUNE 1, pick up a Summer Reading Log at your Library. One log per person.
  2. THE LOG. Color in one circle for every half hour you read or listen to a book (audio books are OK).
  3. PRIZES! For every 8 hours of reading or listening pick up a prize and earn an entry in our End-of-Summer drawing.
  4. THE END. Last day to pick up logs is AUG 12. Program ends AUG 31. Prizes must be collected by AUG 31.

PRIZES FOR 18 & UNDER

LEVEL 1 (16 circles) DQ Dilly Bar or $1.75 credit to The Good Food Store

LEVEL 2 (32 circles) One free book

LEVEL 3 (50 circles) Available after June 22 - $3.50 credit to The Good Food Store or a Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizza

END OF SUMMER  Play Library Bingo, and earn up to 5 entries in our End-of-Summer drawing

SUMMER KIDS ACTIVITIES

JUNE 18: CRAFTS IN SPACE Make rockets that really fly, create (and destroy!) moon rocks, trap a galaxy in a bottle, doodle on the moon, and play a constellation game.

JULY 2: BUILD A UNIVERSE WITH CODE Talk to computers using their language! Learn the basics of coding with some fun, hands-on activities.

JULY 16: COUNT YOUR LUCKY STARS Learn all about the beautiful stars in our night sky.

JULY 30: CELEBRATE SUMMER Celebrate summer at the library! We’ll have books, games, and snacks — you bring the laughs, smiles, and fun!

AUGUST 6: ROMP! A safe and friendly environment for improvisational games and easy creative movement play for all abilities and all ages.

 

SPECIAL KIDS EVENTS

HARRY AND THE POTTERS IN CONCERT, JULY 12: 7 PM: LIBRARY PARKING LOT (WEATHER PERMITTING)  What if Harry Potter quit the quiddich team, stole a time turner, and started a punk rock band with himself from an earlier point in the space-time continuum? The answer is Harry and the Potters, aka wizard-rock duo Joe and Paul DeGorge. Join us as they perform their musical extravaganza!

MUSIC & MAGIC FROM THE POLKAVERSE, JULY 22: 3 PM: LIBRARY LARGE MEETING ROOM  This Pint-Size Polkas program with Mike Schneider will bring smiles to the faces of young and old alike.

 

KIDS TABLE  JUNE 17-AUGUST 23, Mon. through Fri. 11:30-1 PM  In cooperation with Missoula Food Bank, we will have free lunch and activities for kids and their caregivers throughout the summer. Activities are sponsored by: MPL, SpectrUM, Missoula Food Bank, and a fun variety of Missoula organizations.

WEST AFRICAN KORA PERFORMANCE WITH SEAN GASKELL  JUNE 17: 6:30 PM  Asheville, North Carolina-based musician Sean Gaskell performs with the kora, an ancient 21-stringed harp.

GEORGE BIRD GRINNELL, FATHER OF GLACIER NATIONAL PARK  JUNE 18: 6:30 PM  Hugh Grinnell, distant cousin of renowned conservationist George Bird Grinnell, impersonates his cousin in period costume and tells his story using historical photos, maps, and quotes from Grinnell’s field journals.

METEORITES, AN INCONVENIENT SCIENCE  JULY 16: 6:30 PM  Martin Horejsi, Associate Professor of Instructional Technology and Science Education at the University of Montana, discusses stories about witnessed meteorite falls and the science they forced upon humans.

INTRO TO TELESCOPES WITH WESTERN MT ASTRONOMICAL ASSOCIATION  JULY 22: 6:30 PM  Nick Wethington, President of the Western Montana Astronomical Association, demonstrates how to use the telescopes available for checkout through the Missoula Public Library. Come with an adventurous spirit!

STAR GAZING AT THE PAYNE FAMILY NATIVE AMERICAN CENTER  AUGUST 24 & 31: 10-11 AM  Learn about the constellations, planets, and bright deep sky objects in the Star Gazing Room of the Payne Family Native American Center on the UM campus! Space is limited and online registration is required.
